Percolators began to be developed from the mid-nineteenth century. In the United States, James H. Mason of Massachusetts patented an early percolator design in 1865. Coffeemakers or coffee machines are cooking appliances used to brew coffee. In recent years air-pump-driven espresso machines have emerged. These machines use compressed air to force the hot water through the coffee grounds.
